Boneraiser Minions – Alternative Wizard Strategy (Boner-hungry Wizard)

I don’t usually write guides, so I’ll try to just get the necessary information across without making it fancy.

This is a much more aggressive approach to playing the Wizard than described in the other guide I’ve seen. I’ve tried playing more defensively and it never really panned out, and going balls to the wall worked pretty great and has reasonable consistency.

Basics About Spell Usage

First off, I try to retain at least 3 spells for the passive bonuses.

The most important thing is to get off a good Deathen Caress very early on to generate enough fodder minions to fuel this playstyle. If you have a lot of the little buggers they also dish out a very respectable amount of damage.

Then you start going insane with spells. Priority 1 are Magical Chest ones. Always pick this, always use it ASAP. They generate chests which contain further spells.

Priority 2 are Drain Boner and Barrow Bonebolster. You should never be short on Boners to sacrifice. If you are get off another Deathen Caress.

Other than that pick damage spells and just burn them off as you see fit to deal with early big waves until you have only 3 left. In a pinch go below 3 but stock back up as soon as possible. Being below 3 makes you pretty weak and slow.

Relics

Sorcery Wand is priority 1. It makes your spells stronger, increases the radius of Deathen Carress and increases the number of chests you spawn. I’m not sure if there’s any synergy with Drain Boner or Barrow Bonebolster.

Magnifying Glass. As many as you can find. It increases the chance to get multiple spells per chest and also lets you find relics in them.

1-2 ranks of Virginal Bow for passive healing. If you also come across a Magnet you’ll be picking up bones and healing so fast that between that and your Invincibility Frames from Bernard’s Watch you’ll eventually be able to just stand amidst a gaggle of enemies.

Horoscope Charm will net you some extra rerolls which you can use to fish for relics are want.

Bernard’s Watch will save you a ton of damage taken given how many spells and relics you’re collecting, especially later on. Not sure how stacking affects this effect.

Ring of Fire will turn the Diarrhea spell into an INSANE AoE option.Take 2 and even the late game enemies won’t last long as they wade through the burning butt batter.

If you have Ring of Fire, Tummy Bugs can be good as well for extra Diarrhea action from dying enemies.

Otherwise Fairy, Ward Amulet and Mushroom are nice on picks where none of the above are available.

Skelly Key will speed up the chest opening later on when you get a ton of them.

Meldus Flame is nice because you’ll be generating a ton of Level 3 Minions with Barrow Bonebolster, that way you can upgrade them further.

Minions

In terms of minions, I really like to have 1-2 Doppelgangers because they will cast confuse spells and enlarge bones for more XP, and occasionally one of them will randomly cast a highly effective damage spell that wipes out an entire wave. Just level 1 is fine, they’ll be leveling by Barrow Bonebolster on their own.

Get least 1 Augur and 1 Witch to to level 3 and try to keep them around.

Other than that it hardly matters. You’ll be leveling them up to Meldus ones as soon as you get the chance anyways.

Potential

This was the best run I’ve managed with this build so far. I also included what the screen should look like towards the end of a run. Look at all that Booty!

I love two things in life, games and sports. Although sports were my earliest interest, it was video games that got me completely addicted (in a good way). My first game was Crash Bandicoot (PS1) from the legendary studio Naughty Dog back in 1996. I turned my passion for gaming into a job back in 2019 when I transformed my geek blog (Re-actor) into the gaming website it is today.
