Brute WyvernElder’s Recess

A returning monster from previous games, Brachydios has slime it secretes from its mouth and horn that has explosive properties. It will lick the pounders on its forearms and leave pools of this slime that will explode after a short time. It also features a large mace like tail it uses to try and pound opponents into the dust.

Having defeated Nargacuga and Glavenus, you’re now tasked with two more returning monsters making their way to the new world, Tigrex and Brachydios. Before you leave the hub, make sure to grab plenty of the following: Max/Mega/Potions, Cool Drink. Before heading into this fight, it is necessary to have new armor at this point. Even the best High Rank armor is not going to help you much.

Heading into the Elder’s Recess, start at the camp near area 2 and then make your way southeast toward Area 5 where you’ll trigger a cutscene showing Brachydios killing a poor Uragaan. It willl then prepare to blast you into kingdom come so be ready.

Brachydios Strategy

If you find yourself struggling with this monster, consider crafting or equipping some of the armor, weapons and jewels found below.Note: These weapons and armor pieces are the ideal options for the FIRST time you fight this monster. Later in the game, there are undoubtedly better options.

Ideal Armor PiecesIdeal WeaponsIdeal Decorations
Best: Master Rank Uragaan Armor (Highest Defense, Highest Fire Resistance)Best: Ice Weapons like Master Rank BeotodusBlast Resist Jewels, Evasion Jewels, Partbreaker Jewels, Vitality Jewels, Defense Jewels
Other: Master Rank Glavenus Armor has the second highest defense currently available and good blast defense as wellNext Best: A lot of weapons will work as a good secondary option as it is moderately weak to all the Ailments except blast, as well as water

Brachydios is every bit as interesting a fight as he has been in the past games. It has one of the more interesting mechanics in the game: a glowing slime it activates using its saliva. When activated, this slime acts like a ticking bomb wherever it is placed on the ground, turning from green-to yellow-to the ready-to-blow up red.

You’ll notice that the pounders on its forearms glow green when activated. It will then perform series of attacks that leave the slime around. If you get hit by one of these attacks, or happen to walk through a pool of slime, you will contract blastblight. Easy enough to get rid of it. Simply roll around 3 times until you stop sparking. However if you are hit with one of Brachydios’ explosions while under the effects of blast blight, you’ll take major damage. Slime also secretes from the large horn on Brachydios’ head. It can use this to leave a larger pool of slime you’ll have to avoid when it’s not enraged.

Once enraged, all aspects of the fight quicken in pace. The slime both on his body and that he leaves on the ground is automatically yellow, making the timer before it explodes shorter, and his pounders will explode on impact as he slams the ground. He also gains the ability when he slams his head down to create a large series of explosions radiating outward from his head, so back off when you see this.

In terms of attacks Brachydios has a lot to look out for. His most common one is a walk forward he does, slamming his pounders in the ground as he moves. This attack is faster when he’s enraged, and the effects of the slime differ as stated above.

Brachydios also has mad hops. He can jump way across the map to surprise you if you thought you were safe sharpening or chugging a potion, so keep on the lookout for that.

You should try to break both the pounders, horn and tail if you can. Most likely the tail will be the easiest to access as the front of the monster is where most of the attacks it uses come from.
