A small guide for the Backgrounds available as of 1.0. Critical Damage assumes damage is multiplied by 2 before multiplied by what your STR adds. Cooldown speed increases are assumed as multipliers to damage.
Note 1: There are likely some errors in these tables but the general idea remains.
Note 2: Increases from gear does benefit good Backgrounds more than bad so factoring in gear is of no concern to the basic comparison of the Backgrounds.

Table 2: All Points Into WIS / DEX, Rest STR (Crit Status Damage)
Conclusion: “Village Idiot” wins except vs “Rogue Alchemist”, but which has the lowest Surviveability, so will have to retreat earlier and which’s attacks that apply these Status Effects do much less damage so overall at best a draw between the 2, but in most scenarios “Village Idiot” still wins.

Final Conclusion
“Village Idiot is by far and for all Classes and possible encounters the best option and IMO the only option to choose.
That is because everything from A to Z benefits from Critical Hits and the clear loss of Surviveability of some other Backgrounds can simply not outperform a measly few % increase in damage of only a specific application of damage.
The other Backgrounds really need an overhaul as to either add much more Points into the Stats to benefit a specific appliance of damage, not have any penalty Points whatsoever or the bonuses of these specific appliances to be much higher than the generalized Critical Damage that applies to everything. For instance…
Background | STR | DEX | INT | WIS | CON | ATT |
Idiot “non-Spellcaster” | 8 | – | -4 | – | – | – |
Elf “Spellcaster” | – | 2 | 8 | – | -4 | – |
Monk “Tank” | -4 | – | – | – | 8 | – |
Horder “Action Skill” | 2 | – | -2 | – | -2 | 8 |
Alchemist “Status Effects” | – | – | – | 8 | -4 | – |
Note: Spells and Action Skills meaning INT and ATT-using builds are specialized builds and get +2 over the others that are generalized for all appliances (or reduction) of damage.Note: Spells and Action Skills meaning INT and ATT-using builds are specialized builds and get +2 over the others that are generalized for all appliances (or reduction) of damage.
