This guide exists to showcase decks you can make with just a single in-game pack. For example, let’s say you have a complete set of Grandpa Muto cards- you could wait until you start opening other packs to begin constructing decks, but why when there’s everything you need to make a fun and effective Gravekeepers deck right there?

This guide is for you if:

  • You enjoy trying different types of decks.
  • You want to play decks that are effective in the campaign without being too overpowered.
  • You like playing with archetypes and seeing what they have to offer.
  • You want to respect the ban list (and if not, it isn’t hard to make tweaks to suit your needs).

Mai

Mai’s packs have three different archetypes; if you’re familiar with the character in the anime, you’ll not be surprised to find that her packs include both Harpy and Amazoness cards, either of which you can make a decent deck with. There’s also a fair number of Insect cards, but if you want to make an Insect deck, it’s best to wait until you get to the Kite Tenjo packs where Inzektors will be available.

Extra Deck

  • 3x Harpie’s Pet Phantasmal Dragon

The main way you’ll be playing this deck is using Harpie Channeler to get out what you need- leading to using one of the dragons as your heavy hitter. Pet Phantasmal Dragon is great on both offense and defense, though newcomers would do well to remember that it only protects from effects that target- cards like Dark Hole or Mirror Force that do not target a monster will not be stopped by it.

There’s a few important things to remember; firstly, Harpie Lady 1 is the only card that is named “Harpy Lady” while it’s in your hand or deck- this is why we don’t use Elegant Egotist.

Secondly, Harpies’ Hunting Ground is a double-edged sword; if you have it out, you must use its effect when you summon any card that is “Harpie Lady” while it’s on the field; this means that you’ll have to destroy a spell or trap even if only your own are available- this isn’t entirely bad though. You want to destroy Hysteric Sign, it’s designed for this; if the cards that Hysteric Party summoned are already gone, there’s no harm in destroying it; and of course, Harpies’ Hunting Ground can destroy itself if your other cards are too valuable at the time.

Thirdly, Mind Control is not useless- it certainly can be swapped out if you don’t like it, but remember that Xyz Summoning does NOT tribute the material monsters- this means you can combo it with Harpie Channeler and her special summon ability to get out Harpie’s Pet Phantasmal Dragon in a single turn if your opponent plays a level 4 monster for you to steal.

My first game was Crash Bandicoot (PS1) from the legendary studio Naughty Dog back in 1996. I turned my passion for gaming into a job back in 2019 when I transformed my geek blog (Re-actor) into the gaming website it is today.
