A meteor impact with the Earth in 2043 created a mysterious wormhole known as a gate, which set off an apocalyptic chain of events. Smaller gates began to appear across all continents, causing global collapse as pollution from the gates known as Red Matter began to corrupt Earth’s people and land in a process known as redshift. 90 percent of all land on Earth was rendered uninhabitable within six months of the gates’ appearance.
